Decision on Admission: Mid-May 2010
Date for Immatriculation: 15 June 2010

Prerequisites
The Master’s degree in Music Performance requires advanced artistic skills in general musical and artistic/aesthetic areas. Solid instrumental/vocal or technical and creative abilities are required. Skills in reflection, theoretical justification, and articulation of ideas are also expected, along with a high level of personal responsibility and independence. An additional requirement is the ability to enter a transdisciplinary artistic environment and to contribute to transdisciplinary projects.

Bern University of the Arts
The BUA unites a wide variety of artistic disciplines under a single roof. The University offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of design, fine arts, conservation and restoration, music, literature and theatre.

The BUA offers internationally recognised Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree courses. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is used to credit the student’s achievements. One ECTS credit point corresponds to 30 hours’ work per semester by the student, including both contact study and private study. An academic year is generally estimated at 60 ECTS credit points. This corresponds to 1800 hours of work. Those following an artistic course of study, however, generally devote considerably more time to their studies, particularly in respect of their independent work. BUA courses are generally pursued on a full-time basis. Part-time study is possible on most courses by agreement with those in charge of the course.

While the students at the BUA focus on their chosen discipline, they also perceive of themselves as part of an artistic landscape that includes innovative arts, design and research and operates on an interdisciplinary basis. This particularly close proximity to other disciplines serves to broaden their horizons. The acquisition of interface competencies guarantees a sustainable professional qualification at university.

Major projects, such as the Biennale Bern are organised jointly with cultural proffessionals. The BUA stands out amongst other centres of learning through its large number of public appearances and its strong prescence in the capital's cultural scene.

Bachelor of Arts in Music
The Bachelor’s degree in Music provides aspiring musicians with a broad basic practical and theoretical training. The core subjects are instrumental or vocal work or composition and forms of expression using media, depending on the Major. The aim is to deepen the musicians’ form of expression as much as possible. The degree is a preparation for specialisation in a Master’s course.

The course takes place in one of the three fields:
Classical Music (with the Majors Instrument/Voice, Composition, Band conducting)
Jazz (with the Major Instrument/Voice)
Music & Media Arts

Master of Arts in Music Performance
In the Master’s degree in Music Performance, students in

Classical Music
Jazz

achieve artistic maturity in their instrument or voice. Their objective is to become professional musicians. This demands a solid instrumental or vocal training as much as the understanding of a piece of music in its context, and the mastery of a broad, demanding repertoire. One focus of the BUA degree is the formation of musical flexibility, while another is the ability to realise an idea independently.

Master of Arts in Specialized Music Performance
The Master’s degree in Specialized Music Performance is the highest degree in classical music. Students in this degree programme, with its extremely individualised training, should reach a top international level of achievement.

The following Majors are offered:
Instrument/Voice
Opera

The degree course takes the whole stylistic breadth of today’s careers in music into account. Close cooperation with orchestras and theatres ensures proximity to artistic practice. Students regularly have opportunities to perform, and they prepare for a career as soloists on national and international stages.

EU Mobility Promotion Schemes: ERASMUS and DA VINCI
ERASMUS and DA VINCI are individual programmes within the EU’s overall lifelong learning programme.

ERASMUS
Is the acronym for European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students. This programme was developed in order to promote the mobility of European students. The aim of ERASMUS is to encourage students to spend part of their studies (an exchange semester) at a different university in another European country. ERASMUS opens the door to a partner university and provides teaching staff and students with mobility grants.

DA VINCI
Is a programme that promotes periods of practical experience in other European countries. The aim of DA VINCI is for participants to acquire professional experience abroad and thus benefit from the opportunity of getting to know other cultures and languages. Students can participate in the DA VINCI programme during or after vocational training or during or after a course of study at a University of Applied Sciences or a traditional university.

Although Switzerland is not an EU member state, agreements were concluded in the context of the bilateral agreement which permit Switzerland to participate in these programmes.
